Choosing VCE subjects: a guide for Year 10 families

How to choose VCE subjects that keep doors open and play to your child's strengths.

Start with prerequisites

Many university courses require specific VCE subjects — for example Maths Methods for engineering and many science courses. Check the prerequisites for courses your child is considering before choosing subjects.

Questions to ask

  • Which subjects does my child enjoy and do well in now?
  • Which subjects are prerequisites for courses they might want?
  • Is the workload balanced across the year?
  • If unsure about a career path, which choices keep the most options open?

Don't chase scaling alone

Scaling matters, but a high study score in a subject your child enjoys usually contributes more than a low score in a subject chosen only because it scales well. Talk to the school's careers adviser and use VTAC resources.
